by KYW’s Phran Novelli

Did you water the pots?   It’s hot, it’s sunny and potted plants just sit there waiting for you to water them.  Again.  And again.  So anything you can do to keep them from drying out so fast makes life easier for you and your plants – and saves water.

Glazed pots hold water better than plain terracotta and plastic and resin pots do too. Your soil mix matters as well – blends with moisture-retaining pellets will keep you from having to water so often.  But, if you’ve already planted everything, here’s one simple thing you can still do – add a layer of mulch.

Putting an inch or two of mulch atop the soil in your pots, hanging baskets and window boxes, not only holds moisture, it helps stop the soil from spilling over the edge when you do water.  So, take a minute to mulch your planters.  It’ll buy you some time between waterings, and you might even be able to go away for a weekend without having to worry.
